Maggi Miller: handmade paper from Austin, Texas

My subject matter varies according to my current inspiration: sketches made years in the past suddenly find life in a particular piece of paper; a photograph will illustrate a negative space in an interesting way; sometimes an image from a dream will stick with me.

The process of making a collage with my own paper is extremely satisfying and stretches my imagination, vision, and intelligence. The term comes from the French word "coller," meaning "to paste." Most collages are made with "found" materials (postcards, newspaper scraps, cardboard), continuing the tradition introduced by various cubist artists such as Picasso and Braque. Mine continue the exploration of what happens when essentially two-dimensional elements are pasted together on a flat surface to create an image, but I prefer to work with the mysteries in the paper I make with pulp from cotton, abaca, linen, denim jeans, and so forth.
